What time and a half means
Time and a half is 1.5 times your regular hourly rate. It is the minimum federal overtime rate for non-exempt employees who work more than 40 hours in a workweek.
Time and a half rate = hourly rate × 1.5
At $18.50 an hour, time and a half is $18.50 × 1.5 = $27.75 an hour. A quick way to do it in your head: add half your rate to your rate. Half of $18.50 is $9.25, and $18.50 + $9.25 = $27.75.

Working out time and a half pay
Multiply the time-and-a-half rate by your overtime hours. Enter the hours above to have it done for you.
For example, 6 hours 30 minutes of overtime at $18.50 an hour is 6.5 × $27.75 = $180.38. Convert minutes to a decimal first: 30 minutes is 0.5 hours. The hours to decimal calculator handles awkward times like 6 hours 50 minutes (6.83 hours).

When time and a half applies
- After 40 hours in a workweek under federal law, for non-exempt employees. See the Department of Labor's overtime rules.
- Not automatically on weekends or holidays. Federal law does not require premium pay for those days unless the hours go over 40 for the week. Some employers pay it anyway.
- Sometimes after 8 hours in a day, in states with daily overtime. California pays time and a half over 8 hours in a workday and double time over 12.
- On your regular rate, not just your base rate. Non-discretionary bonuses and shift differentials raise the regular rate that time and a half is based on.
