How to convert a salary to an hourly rate
Divide the yearly salary by the hours you work in a year. A full-time year is 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, or 2,080 hours.
Hourly rate = yearly salary ÷ (hours a week × 52)
A $52,000 salary is $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00 an hour.
To go the other way, multiply: $20 an hour × 2,080 hours = $41,600 a year. Switch the calculator to Hourly rate to do this.
Quick mental math
Halve the salary and drop three zeros to get a rough hourly rate: $60,000 becomes about $30 an hour (the exact figure is $28.85). Going from hourly to yearly, double the rate and add three zeros: $25 an hour is about $50,000 (exactly $52,000). The shortcut uses 2,000 hours, so it is always a little off.

When 2,080 hours is the wrong number
- Unpaid time off. If you are hourly and take two unpaid weeks, you are paid for 50 weeks, not 52. Change Paid weeks a year to see your real yearly pay.
- Part-time hours. 30 hours a week at $18.75 is 30 × 52 × $18.75 = $29,250 a year, not $39,000.
- Long salaried weeks. If a salaried job really takes 50 hours a week, your effective hourly rate is lower: $52,000 ÷ (50 × 52) = $20.00 an hour.
- Overtime. An hourly job that regularly includes overtime pays more than its base rate suggests. Use the overtime calculator to price a typical week.
Comparing a salaried and an hourly job
The hourly equivalent is a starting point, not the whole picture.
- Overtime. Most hourly workers must be paid 1.5× for hours over 40 a week. Salaried workers may be exempt from overtime, depending on their pay and duties; being paid a salary does not by itself make someone exempt. See the Department of Labor's overtime rules.
- Paid time off. Paid holidays and vacation are part of the pay. To see how much PTO an offer gives you per paycheck, use the PTO calculator.
- Benefits. Health insurance, retirement matching and bonuses can be worth a lot. Add their yearly value to the salary before comparing.
